Woman holding fluoride cardFluoride is known as “Nature’s Cavity Fighter” because it can strengthen the enamel to make it more resistant to tooth decay. Fluoride is found naturally all around you, but it is also included in many dental products, like toothpaste. Your dentist even offers fluoride treatments during routine appointments, especially for children. Although tooth decay can occur at any age, children are the most at risk. Applying the varnish gives them an added layer of protection to combat cavity-causing bacteria, but do adults need fluoride treatments, too? Yes, and here’s how fluoride can protect your smile.

Adults Can Get Cavities Too

Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic condition for children, even more common than asthma. Children are prone to cavities because baby teeth are softer than the primary. Not to mention, children don’t brush and floss very well. A fluoride varnish coats their teeth to strengthen their enamel to lessen the risk of decay, which is why most dental plans cover the treatment for patients under the age of 18.

The threat of cavities doesn’t end when you become an adult, however. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over a quarter of adults have untreated cavities. Although a fluoride treatment won’t repair the damage, it can safeguard your smile from future decay and remineralize areas of weakened enamel.

Candidates for Fluoride Treatments

Although fluoride treatments aren’t a common service for many adults, your dentist may recommend them for certain patients who may be at risk of specific dental concerns, such as:

Dry Mouth

Specific medications used to treat age-related health conditions can cause try mouth. Without adequate saliva flow, the mouth becomes the perfect environment for bad oral bacteria to thrive, like those responsible for cavities and gum disease. Fluoride can help protect your smile if dry mouth is an ongoing problem.

Receding Gum Line

Untreated gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. As the gum line recedes, it can expose the root surfaces, which are softer than the crowns. A fluoride varnish will make them less vulnerable to decay.

Previous Dental Work

Your dentist may also recommend fluoride if you have restorative work, like crowns or bridges. The varnish can protect the margins where the restorations meet your gum line to prevent decay from compromising your investment.

Orthodontics

Adults undergoing orthodontic treatment can benefit from fluoride. It can keep your teeth strong and healthy because brackets and wires can make it difficult to brush and floss.

Tooth Sensitivity

Your enamel naturally weakens over time due to daily wear and tear, which can lead to reoccurring tooth sensitivity. Fluoride can help reduce this, so you can enjoy hot and cold foods without any pain.

If your dentist recommends adding a fluoride treatment at your next preventive visit, it’s a wise choice for your smile.
